Unlike the Nursing Home industry which accepts Medicare, the Assisted Living Industry generally does not, leaving the States to manage compliance and maintain a level of quality. This has led to many abuses in the name of profit for unscrupulous providers in the market, as was covered in-depth in this Pro-Publica/Frontline story. Here is a link to the Frontline Video Report on PBS.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been collecting information from Nursing Homes for many years and over this time they have built a database of deficiencies based on regular inspections and formal complaints from residents and family. Fortunately, this information is public though the CMS.
We have built some interactive charts and graphs using statistics released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The type of analysis can be seen across the top and in most cases, you can select the type of information, such as State, to be displayed. As we all wrestle with this issue in an aging society, it is good to know that there is some transparency that allows us to make better decisions about these types of life choices.
